What is the Timmins Local Immigration Partnership?
Timmins plays an important economic role in northern Ontario through its uniqueness in diversity and rich natural resources. However, the Population trends in many of Ontario’s northern regions suggest a high core working age emigration level. And because of this, there’s a potential for labour shortages. Timmins could benefit from attracting a new generation of entrepreneurs to replace those who retire and help drive growth in important industries such as trade, transportation, and tourism. Critical to sustaining this economic growth is a strategic move to ensure that there is a talent pipeline large and strong enough to meet local industry demands and provide a source of new entrepreneurs
The Timmins Local Immigration Partnership is designed to create welcoming community initiatives to welcome, attract, and retain immigrants.
TLIP aims to create a community that has a strong desire to welcome newcomers and where everyone works to create an environment within which newcomers feel at home
The TLIP was formally established in March 2009 through funding from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (now Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada). As one of the 80 LIPs across Ontario, it is designed to provide a collaborative framework to facilitate the development and implementation of sustainable solutions for the successful integration of newcomers to Ontario
The TLIP’s original purpose was to create economic vitality in Timmins by attracting, retaining, and integrating newcomers to the area. It was thus embedded in the Timmins Economic Development Corporation (TEDC).
In April of 2011, as the number of partners increased, its initiative expanded to address key areas of newcomer needs and was thus transferred to the Northeastern Ontario Multicultural Center, formerly known as Timmins and District Multicultural Center (TDMC).
TLIP grew from a small group of partners in 2009 to a collaboration with 30+ community partners.
